early documentation of nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó, 2022-ongoing.
nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó (spring music, here and there) explores Vietnamese migration and cultural preservation through reimagined archives, photography, sound, and plants. Phase 1 of this project (archival research) is generously supported by the Grants for Individual Artists from EC3 and the City of Peterborough.
Artist-in-Residence at Artspace Peterborough
In August 2023, I was awarded a one month residency at Artspace Peterborough’s maker space. During my residency, I continued developing my research for nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó (spring music, here and there). In Phase 2 of the project, I documented plants from my parents garden through scans, drawings, photography, and video. I experimented with creating biodegradable containers from hand-made paper called, VESSELS. These first iterations were on display during the city’s First Friday Art Crawl in September.
I also hosted a community zine making workshop which culminated into a community cookbook which is available for viewing online here.
(re)planting is comprised of a series of photographs that include scans of herbs from Huỳnh’s family’s garden in Peterborough, Ontario, herbs from her aunt’s home in Westminster, California and digital collages of her family photographs. (re)planting is an extension of the on-going and multi-phased project, nhạc xuân, ở đây và ở đó (spring music, here and there) which explores how a garden becomes an archive and a site of Vietnamese migration, cultural preservation, longing and love.
This series was exhibited at the multimedia exhibition, Here/There: Chúng Tôi at the Black Umbrella Gallery curated by Audrey Bui in Fall 2024.
